GROUND Engineering Consultants, Inc. offers a wide variety of seismic evaluations. In general accordance with the 2003 International Building Code, Seismic Site Class is to be either estimated based on the subsurface conditions at a project site or by performing actual measurement. Per recent government amendment, various municipalities, including the City and County of Denver, have dictated that seismicity design information be obtained directly from shear wave velocity testing. This testing is performed utilizing sophisticated downhole and crosshole seismic equipment, including state of the art Freedom DATA© instrumentation.

In addition to seismic applications, the equipment is used to evaluate the structural integrity and length of drilled piers, when properly installed during pier construction. Testing may also be performed on existing piers, after construction is completed.

Downhole/Crosshole(DS/CS)

  • Performed for determining Shear Wave Velocity
  • Shear Wave Velocity determines Seismic Site Class (2003 IBC)
Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL)
  • Performed for determining caisson integrity
  • Involves installation of PVC "tubes" within caisson reinforcement cage
  • PVC tubes must be installed during construction of caisson
  • Contractor installs PVC
Sonic Echo Impulse Response
  • Performed for determining caisson integrity and length
  • Testing performed after construction complete
  • No equipment/caisson set-up needed during construction
